Program Description: The Research Care and Training Program (RCTP) is collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington (UW)- and other affiliated institutions. RCTP leads the Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) program, a comprehensive HIV prevention and Treatment program in Kisumu County.

Position Summary
The Communications Officer will lead and manage press & information issues while providing expertise to improve the visibility and general understanding of the planning, development implementation of the Programme’s internal and external communication, including publicity, website management and publications,
Duties and Responsibilities
 Plan, develop and implement Public Relations strategies for the Program (s)
 Prepare proactive and reactive media activities including press releases, tweets, briefings, interviews
 Collating, analyzing, and reporting on all media coverage of the Program.
 Design, publish, and distribute an in-house magazine on studies, projects, programs, and other activities. Ensure all major activities are covered both in print and visual (photos/videos) where necessary and feasible
 Lead and organize events such as press conferences as and when necessary.
 Liaise with the ICT department to maintain and update information on the Program’s website.
 Foster community relations through events such as open days and through involvement in community initiatives

 Acts as liaison between the Program, the funders, collaborators, other stakeholders and the general public by answering detailed inquiries either orally or in writing on a variety of Program activities
 Upkeep of media contacts including mailing and mobile phone lists and increase media awareness of all staff;

 Maintain accurate and up to date database of all communications  Provide communication advice, and crafting suitable messages, use of the right media channels, and developing strategic solutions to given communications challenges.  Open, Update and maintenance of social media accounts for the Program (Twitter, Facebook, You tube).  Prepare and Manage a communications budget  Manage the Program’s knowledge management system to support writing of abstracts, documentation and sharing of best practices and success stories within RCTP, and ensure accessibility through various tools – intranet, portals etc.
Qualifications and Experience
 Bachelor’s degree in related Journalism, Communication, international relations or equivalent.
 At least 3 years pertinent experience in media relations and communication
 At least one years’ experience in as a communication officer
 Experience in US Government Donor funded organization will be an added advantage
 High integrity and ethics
 Excellent knowledge and experience in the areas of health communication and health policy analysis Knowledge in Health matters and experience in covering Health related News is an added advantage
 Experience with print media or Radio or TV an advantage
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes Required:
 Excellent written and spoken English (main working language). Good Knowledge of Kiswahili ( spoken and written)
 Good working Knowledge of Publishing software
 Good computer skills, Ms. Office packages, Word, excel, Power point
 Demonstrated leadership and partnership building skills
 Strong analytical and negotiation skills
 Strategic planning skills
 Networking skills
 Evidence of Science reporting
Personal initiative and ability to prioritize, monitor and evaluate progress, and to meet deadlines
Other Requirements:
 Must be a member of a professional body
 Must have been Cleared by HELB
 Must have KRA Tax Compliance Certificate
 Must have credit refference Bureau Certificate
 Must have Certificate of good conduct
