Job Purpose
The position takes a lead role in the development and implementation of the communication function and is responsible for designing, implementing, managing and directing internal as well as external communication.

The position is responsible for providing thought leadership in and strategic management of communication within the organization. The Chief Communication Officer is a key member of thesenior management team and assists the Executive Director in the overall management of the Consortium’s communication strategy. The position holder shall lead the Communication and Policy Outreach Division and oversee a team with competencies in web development and design, publications production, media relations, social media engagement, public affairs management and event

A critical deliverable for this position is increasing the brand and visibility of AERC by ensuring that the Consortium’s position, products and services reach out across Africa and beyond, in English and in French. The Chief Communication Officer will help to position AERC as a premier organization for the advancement of research and training to inform economic policies in Africa. Additionally, the position is responsible for connecting network members with one another, as well as with the array of information available on economics and the Consortium’s research and training activities.

Key Qualifications and Experience
 Master’s degree in Communication, Marketing, Public Relations or relevant technical field
 Demonstrable extensive experience in writing/editing and publishing in a professional environment with capacity to process complex technical subject matter.
 Knowledge and experience in of the networked communication environment, including
electronic publishing, web-based publishing and online engagement.
 At least 10 years relevant work experience, with at least five years at management level

Key Skills
 University level proficiency in English use, together with, Communication,Marketing, Public Affairs or relevant technical field.
 At least 5 years’ hands-on experience in, communications, public relations, marketing or related experience. Work experience within NGOs in communication roles a plus.
 Excellent oral communication and presentation skills
 Ability to speak, write and edit in French is a requirement
 Strong technical editing skills in policy and research advocacy
 Proven skills and track record in writing, designing and producing publications within schedule and budget. Knowledge of desktop publishing and website management.
 Strong analytical, problem solving and strategic thinking skills.
 Proven track record in crisis communication as well as successfully dealing with the media and using social media to communicate about an organization
