As a Network Operations Engineer, you will be responsible for the daily performance and availability of the Kalanets’ network, resolution for all Network level faults as well as resolution for escalations for customer faults that are network related or require high level engineering resources and the IP planning function.

Plans IP network structure and recommends upgrades/changes; assesses organization’s current and future network needs.

Oversees the daily operations of Network Operations Centre (NOC) and may oversee and train junior staff. You will also document incidents and changes to the network.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the network is fully operationally functional 24/7
  • Make sure we plan and build the network for growth.
  • Ensure that all network outages are resolved by our internal teams and our suppliers quickly and within timeliness
  • Ensure all outages are captured and measured and each supplier is held to account against SLA breaches and associated compensation claims.
  • Ensure all network issues are raised with high quality tickets and resolved within SLA in a well-documented end manner, including a detailed RFO and RCA for every ticket.
  • Ensure feedback to Customer Service and Tech Support and recommend training where ticket quality is not good enough for enabling suitable Level 3 and Level 4 resolution.
  • Ensure the network has enough IP capacity (bandwidth and device resources) at all times to fulfil all customer orders and meet growth forecasts in a time
  • Ensure timely capability planning processes and operational measurement so that Kalanet proactively adapts and scales the network.
  • Manage Level 3 Network support process directly and ensure the most efficient and cost-effective operation at all times
  • Ensure the creation and management of detailed documentation supporting the function and adherence to that documentation and processes for all people within the team
  • Proactively identify areas where Kalanets’s NOC and IP planning/design function and corresponding operational processes can be improved
  • Drive Incident management, monitoring, tracking, ensuring service level and process compliance
  • Drive promotion of proactive mindset, SLA compliance, and meaningful metrics reporting
  • Implement new solutions, strategies, processes supporting the NOC Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintaining a safe work environment by conducting regularly scheduled safety meetings, applicable safety training and reinforcing legal/regulatory safety requirements within the workplace
  • Manage vendor relationships, reporting, and escalations
  • Keep records of our hardware inventory.

Requirements:

  • Have knowledge of IP, WIFI, WiMAX, CDMA, LTE, GSM networks
  • Have project experience with multiple frequencies and wired and wireless technologies and IP protocols.
  • Have practical experience with deployment, optimization and operation of medium to large size networks on IP, IPVN, IP Security, 2.4GHz, 5.8GHz Wireless Networks, CDMA, GSM, UMTS, Wi-Fi and WiMAX
  • Have a thorough and Excellent understanding of IP and IP Protocols and LAN and WAN deployments
  • Have a good understanding of RF and microwave propagation and broadband modulation techniques
  • Understand in-building wireless network projects, floor plans, site surveys and the fundamentals of testing
  • Have experience leading large-scale network deployment and optimization projects
  • Have In-depth knowledge of project planning methodologies and best practices in project management
  • Have Experience and in-depth hands-on knowledge in drive testing and use of industry standard testing equipment – Spectrum Analyzer/Telco and Fiber equipment
  • Have Experience managing web application development, coding, software development methodology
  • Have Experience in discerning user requirements and specification development
  • Have Vendor relations and negotiation skills and experience
  • Have Network deployment and site build experience
  • Have Experience with UNIX systems and web server systems
  • Have Knowledge of internet protocols and RFC standards, database management systems and control systems
  • Be familiar with IS and IP vulnerabilities and risk management
  • Be familiar with consumer privacy and payments industry compliance requirement
  • Be Well exposed to business theory, process development, governance processes, management, budgeting and administrative operations
  • Ensure the highest possible network availability within the budgetary constraints of the business.
  • Ensure all Network trouble tickets are resolved to Kalanet’s satisfaction within SLA and escalated for timely resolution where necessary.
  • Ensure all resolutions have a detailed RCA so that the company can learn and develop stronger solutions and processes. Proactively identify trends in RCAs and potential areas of operational or technical improvement.
  • Establish and manage a Network Operations Centre governance and operational processes aligned to the overall Network Engineering function, technology and business strategy and ensure all staff members follow it at all times.
  • Integrate network support with the available systems to support resolution of network issues and improve availability, reduce downtime and create a great customer experience
  • Monitor ongoing network fitness based on hands on analysis, financial assessment and client satisfaction metrics.
  • Take responsibility for network Incident management, monitoring, tracking, ensuring service level and process compliance internally and with Kalanet suppliers
  • Implement new solutions, strategies, processes supporting the NOC Standard Operating Procedures
  • Manage technical vendor relationships and hold them to account against the commercial and technical aspects of their contracts
  • Define requirements to improve monitoring and diagnosis framework and tools.
  • Proactively identify areas where Kalanet’s network can be improved either technically or operationally.
  • Identify network capacity requirements driven either by business need or technical needs. Develop the corresponding ongoing network expansion plan, ensure commercial and technical buy from the company executives.
  • Coordinate with Infrastructure Engineering to ensure successful build against plan and transition into operations.

Qualifications:

  • Be eligible to work within Kenya.
  • Degree in IT, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering or any other relevant field
  • Have at least 5 years of hands-on experience in a growth wireless or wire-line network environment, 3 of which must be at management level ideally in the telecommunications or internet industry.
  • Have relevant Professional certifications in IP routing, Switching, IP Traffic Engineering, IP Security, IT Standards /Process e.g. ITIL would be an added advantage
  • Have advanced knowledge of routing and switching protocols, IT Systems, Radio Frequency Engineering an added advantage
  • Have Advanced knowledge of Mikrotik Systems -Routing, Switching, Traffic Engineering
  • Have knowledge of UBNT Systems -Point to Multipoint, Point to Point
  • Practical experience with deployment, optimization and operation of medium to large size wired or wireless data networks
  • Have a strong analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Be results oriented
  • Have strong communication, interpersonal and engagement skills
