DESCRIPTION
 
The Manager, Field Communications plays a critical and central role as liaison between field offices, headquarters, and our offices in the US and Europe. S/he and team are the connective tissue of the organization ensuring we present ourselves to the world – especially our priority stakeholders – as one.
 
Responsibilities
 
Management, Cross-team Planning and Collaboration
  • In collaboration with country directors and other key field program staff, and under management of Director, Public Relations & Corporate Communications (PR&CC), prepare and manage annual field communications plan and budget as part of comprehensive, strategic PR&CC plan and budget helping to deliver on goals of AWF’s ten-year strategy (2019 – 2029)
  • Develop and maintain close and regular contact with country directors and other field staff working across the continent to understand their communications needs, deliver on those needs, and provide support and training to ensure they are equipped with most current communications resources available across the organization
  • Manage and mentor team of two direct reports
  • Participate as key member of Strategic Communications Working Group, liaising and facilitating communications between field, HQ, and offices in the US and Europe, developing and coordinating around organizational editorial calendar and high priority thought leadership events
  • Set and deliver on key indicators to measure progress against goals on quarterly basis
  • Provide technical input related to communications plans needed for proposals, including coordinating wider input of PR&CC and marketing teams as needed. Similarly, coordinate reporting input across communications functions as needed
  • Liaise with M&E and knowledge management team to ensure story telling aligns with/support organization’s strategic goals and indicators
  • Lead regular check-in meetings with all field communications staff, providing opportunity for sharing updates, concerns, opportunities, etc., and ensure organization-wide sharing of news
Strategy and Program Development
  • Work closely with Director, PR&CC, and other senior managers to define, develop, and implement plan for the creation of AWF’s knowledge hub
  • Support line manager in project management of concept development and launch of State of Africa Report
  • Work as part of country planning teams to ensure strategic communications goals are integrated in plans. Liaise and engage other communications functions as needed
  • Provide input into developing youth and education strategies
Media
  • Work with media specialist to develop relationships with and orchestrate events for targeted local and foreign correspondents, with special focus on AWF top tier countries for positive and increased coverage of AWF’s work
  • In partnership with media specialist, organize media tours and events for key spokespeople to engage with editors and writers at elite business publications/platforms to create awareness of the brand
  • Work with Media Specialist and Manager, PR&CC (US) to source stories/content needed for US and Europe markets
  • Draft or edit press releases, op eds, and other pieces for media as needed
  • Monitor and share news and pertinent stories with special attention to priority countries
  • Work with the social media team to source and advise on compelling content from the field, and ID, train, and support new voices and story tellers from the field, ensuring integration into larger AWF social media strategy
Training and Coaching
  • With guidance from the line manager, work with AWF staff to hone presentation skills to ensure presentations at key thought leadership events, delivering professional, compelling presentations to priority stakeholder audiences that are on message and brand
  • Train and coach field staff on identifying, drafting, and sharing compelling stories; work with video and social teams to generate content to increase visibility and acceptance of AWF and its activities
  • Assist media specialist in delivering media training to targeted field staff
  • Train all staff on crisis communications plan and talking points related to high risk issues
  • Support line manager in organizing quarterly review of crisis communication plan and update as needed.
Content/Story Creation and Sharing
  • Working with country directors and other field team, identify opportunities and generate ideas for story telling
  • Provide input and/or draft as directed with clear talking points on AWF’s conservation vision and strategy, and special focus on communications to impact priority country audiences
  • Facilitate the documentation of project experiences, achievements, and lessons learned and share the findings with staff and partners
  • Identify, share, and help curate content from the field for use with media, digital media (web and social), and publishing, to include, video, audio, infographics, and social
  • Develop and manage system of storing and sharing stories across the organization to facilitate unified communications across all priority stakeholders.
  • Work with the Marketing and Creative team to plan and prioritize product development for AWF, and collaborate on the production of information communications products (e.g. press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, etc.)
  • Organize regular All Staff program briefings – featuring program updates, highlights, and great stories. Develop other sharing mechanisms as needed
Program Implementation and Reporting Support
  • Develop tracking system: monitor and support implementation of field communications obligations in collaboration with program, PR & CC, Marketing & Creative teams
  • Facilitate coordinated communications input on donor reports
  • Work with US based PR&CC team to implement influencer/celebrity strategy, especially as it relates to organizing and facilitating field visits
Representation
  • Support development of AWF program, visits, and events as needed (board of trustee meetings, youth groups, safaris participants, donors, etc.)
  • Host VIP guests at AWF headquarters as needed
REQUIREMENTS
  • A bachelor’s degree required in journalism, communications, public relations or a closely related field; master’s preferred
  • Minimum of 6 years working in the fields of public relations, external relations, media relations, or a related area
  • Comfortable interacting with a variety of stakeholders at a variety of levels, – including staff, communities, government officials, corporate representatives, youth, and partners
  • Highly organized with a demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • An excellent listener and a diplomat, able to manage meetings efficiently
  • Management and training experience
  • Experience facilitating cross-functional teams
  • Deep understanding of Africa conservation, wildlife and wild lands, and development concerns
  • Poise, presence, polish, and confidence in representing AWF and conservation at the highest levels, including with heads of state, heads of pan African and international organizations, and the media
  • A story teller, and exemplary writer, editor, and proofreader
  • Knowledge of French and other relevant languages a distinct advantage.
  • Experience with media and or working collaboratively with media teams
  • Ability and willingness to undertake travel as needed, at times to remote and physically challenging locations
