The team

FMO’s Financial Institutions (“FI”) department invests in financial institutions with long-term goals that deliver strong impact for their local economies and communities. The FI teams covering ECA / MENA and FI Africa consists of around 25 highly motivated individuals split into (Senior) Investment Officers who are responsible for business- and market development and client relationships, (Senior) Associates who support Investment Officers in new transaction execution and perform in line with the below profile description, as well as (Senior) Portfolio Analysts who manage the relationships with the existing clients.

Besides offering financial products tailored to the needs of our clients (long-term senior, local currency, syndications), the department contributes to FMO’s overall goal of becoming a leading impact investor by selecting transactions based on the perceived impact on economic growth, inclusiveness and green development.

In 2019, FMO developed a new risk-sharing program called NASIRA (www.nasira.info) to enable and stimulate financial institutions to invest in female, young and migrant entrepreneurs. The programme is partially guaranteed by the European Commission.  The objective is to roll out this program in the next 4 years in the geographies of the European Neighbourhood (FI ECA / MENA) and Sub-Saharan (FI Africa).  It is for this program that we are looking for a (Senior) Associate, even though there is possibility of working on other transactions than NASIRA.  Currently there are 2 Structured Finance Specialists (SFSs) and one Portfolio Officer in this product team.  The Investment Officers in both FI ECA / MENA and FI Africa source the transactions together with the SFSs and the latter with the Associate are responsible for executing the transactions.  The Associate will report into the FI ECA / MENA team, yet work in both regions. 

Your role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious (Senior) Associate who will provide support in the structuring and execution phase of new deals and who will monitor a portfolio of new clients through desk research and site visits.

A (Senior) Associate focuses mostly on supporting Structured Finance specialist in new and innovative transactions with NASIRA. However, there is possibility of working on other transactions than NASIRA. The position allows the Associate to develop her/his skills as an all-round investment professional in a dynamic environment.

Specific tasks include:

  • Preparing market and financial analyses of existing and new clients, sectors and countries;
  • Writing financing proposals and change requests and participate in meetings with the credit department;
  • Preparing and actively participating in due diligence trips;
  • Frequent traveling in the context of due diligence and transaction execution;
  • Building relationships with clients on an operational working level;
  • Supporting the Structured Finance Specialists or Investment Officers throughout all parts of the execution phase of transactions, including contracting;
  • Acting as a knowledgeable sparring partner for other team members.

Your background

Educational background and experience

  • Master’s degree in economics, finance, business administration or engineering;
  • Around 4 years working experience out of which at least 2 years experience in supporting structured finance teams and/or financial analysis or portfolio analysis;
  • Working experience in an international environment and/or in emerging markets is a plus
  • Working experience in guarantees and other related structured finance transactions;
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal is necessary;
  • Experience in Africa and / or Middle East is a plus.

  • Strong analytical and risk assessment skills, including financial modelling in excel and writing skills;
  • Should be comfortable with Structured Finance terminology  
  • Attention to detail and accuracy;

  • Ability to recognize and develop commercial leads;
  • Strong team player;
  • Pro-active work and solution-oriented attitude;

  • Flexible, pragmatic and capable of working on several assignments at the same time;
  • Entrepreneurial and at the same time risk aware when needed.
