The Internship Programme is a learning opportunity aimed at attracting young and talented candidates/students across the globe. The programme will provide selected candidates/students with the opportunity to supplement their academic knowledge with a practical work assignment in a field related to the work of WFP.

This will promote better understanding of WFP Somalia’s mandate and programmes. Similarly, the programme will provide WFP with qualified individuals specializing in relevant fields in line with WFP’s Strategic Objectives and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

WFP Somalia’s activities include food assistance for relief, school feeding, safety nets, nutrition and food assistance for assets creation through provision of in-kind and cash-based transfers. You will be part of a dynamic team that effectively identifies, monitors, evaluates, and manages the organization’s strategic, operational, fiduciary and financial risks in support of WFP’s country strategic plan for Somalia.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the guidance and supervision of the Risk & Compliance Adviser, the intern will be required to undertake the following:

  • Analyse the risks that have been identified by WFP staff to identify trends, commonalities and gaps across the risks that have been identified within a specific risk area or region, the controls that are applied, and the mitigation actions that are proposed. Monitor high risk areas and report on the status of related mitigation measures and strategies;
  • Research, analyse and present risk analysis and risk projections gathered from diverse sources across the humanitarian/development community in Somalia and global industry at large;
  • Support the review and enhancement of the Somalia Country Office compliance and assurance tools, including functional checklists, and recommend areas of improvement;
  • Identify risks and complementary control strengthening actions/mitigation activities that should be considered and included in WFP’s risk assessment toolkit, including but not limited to risk appetite metrics, risk reviews, mitigation actions, risk monitoring, and operational risk analyses as needed;
  • Support the drafting and compilation of risk information into WFP’s corporate risk reporting tools;
  • Prepare written outputs including summaries of the research undertaken, results of analysis, presentation of recommendations, and suggestions for continued risk monitoring;
  • Review WFP Country Office project documents to ensure that risk management is adequately considered;
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Learning Expectations:

Upon completion of the assignment, the intern will have:

  • Understanding of international development and humanitarian principles including WFP’s operations, specifically in Somalia.
  • Good understanding of WFP activities, risk monitoring systems and reporting processes.
  • Better understanding of enterprise risk management systems in WFP.
  • Gained experience in applying qualitative and quantitative data analysis across WFP’s operational portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: The Internship Programme is open to candidates who meet one of the following criteria:

(i) Enrolled in a graduate programme (.eg. a Master’s degree) at a recognized university, studying in the areas of business/Public Administration, economics, international law, finance, accounting, audit, risk management or another related field. Candidates must have completed at least two years of the programme and have attended classes in the past 12 months; OR

(ii) Recent graduate from an undergraduate programme at a recognized university in the areas of business/Public Administration, economics, international law, finance, accounting, audit, risk
management or another related field.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge (academic or practical) in any of the following areas is desirable: audit, risk management and international development.
  • Basic computer skills and use of Microsoft Office packages such as word and excel are essential, other data analysis and data visualization tools would be an asset.

Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English is a requirement.

  • Interns will receive a monthly stipend from WFP.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
