Schistosomiasis or bilharzia is a disease caused by parasitic worms transmitted by freshwater snails. Currently, the presence of infection in humans is diagnosed microscopically through the detection of parasite eggs in stool or urine specimens.
KEMRI through the Eastern and Southern Africa Centre of International Parasite Control (ESACIPAC) in collaboration with partners is seeking to develop a new point–of–care diagnostic test which can be used in the field to quickly identify those who are infected. The project is seeking to recruit interns in the below mentioned field in order to provide them with opportunities to sharpen their skills to complement their studies in line with the Kenya Vision 2030.
Internship position: Laboratory scientist intern (2 positions)
Reporting to: Principal Investigator, Schistosomiasis CAA RDT study
Duty Station: Nairobi
Duration: 6 months
Required Qualifications:
- Must possess a Bachelor’s degree (at least upper second class honours) in any of the following fields: Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Applied Sciences or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Below 30 years of age
Terms of Engagement Appointment will be for a period of six (6) months. The successful candidate(s) will be paid a monthly stipend of KSh 25,000.00without any other additional benefits.
Interns will be expected to show prove of a personal accident cover and medical insurance cover for the period of internship.
The research project WILL NOT offer employment after the completion of internship.
