Job Description

PATH is a global organization that works to accelerate health equity by bringing together public institutions, businesses, social enterprises, and investors to solve the world’s most pressing health challenges. With expertise in science, health, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties. PATH develops and scales solutions—including vaccines, drugs, devices, diagnostics, and innovative approaches to strengthening health systems worldwide.

PATH is currently recruiting for an associate who is seeking to grow their career while making a difference in people’s lives.  The Market Dynamics Program is rapidly growing and adding an Associate to work within PATH’s cross-cutting Market Dynamics Program as part of the broader Technology, Analytics, and Market Introduction Division at PATH. S/he will work with Market Dynamics team members to define problems, conduct analyses, and apply findings to address market failures that restrict access to life-saving products and interventions. Specifically, the associate will support the following teams/projects:

Project 1:  Safe oxygen delivery project specific responsibilities:

  • The Market Dynamics Program is adding project associate to assist with the Market Dynamics oxygen project helping to expand reliable access to safe oxygen and to inform broader improvements in access to other priority MNCH devices. The intern will help the project team with a combination of the following project activities:
    • Collate national standards and norms of medical devices and equipment in low- and middle-income countries, compare inclusions for oxygen delivery devices and pulse oximetry, and prepare a manuscript that highlights key differences, similarities, and opportunities for improvements to standards and norms that might help ensure reliable access to safe oxygen delivery.
    • Contribute to an investment case for safe oxygen delivery; examine the supply costs of different oxygen delivery solutions (liquid oxygen, gas oxygen cylinders, oxygen concentrators, etc.) over time and compile evidence for the cost/benefit of different delivery approaches; determine the cost to the public health system for oxygen delivered per patient per hour based on geography; flexibility to also examine cost effective stocking strategies for medical device spare parts and consumables.
    • Examine existing medical device maintenance contracting models, compare to maintenance of analogous, non-medical devices and compile evidence into a draft manuscript for potential maintenance contracting approaches for medical devices in low- and middle-income countries. The intern may also brainstorm business development strategies for future project work in this area.
    • Assist project team with synthesis of project insights and development of a final market access report. Determine approaches for scaling safe oxygen delivery that are relevant to other essential medical devices and outline an approach(es) for doing so.

Project 2:  MNCH Medical Devices (MD4MD) project

The MNCH Medical Devices project (MD4MD) will diagnose crosscutting market issues that impede access to MNCH medical devices. The goal of the project is to diagnose key barriers that impede access to MNCH medical devices and prioritize potential solutions to address these barriers.

The associate will help the project team with a combination of the following project objectives and activities:

  1. Conducting country-specific medical device inventories to quantify current device

As a key starting point for evaluating access to medical devices, PATH will collect data on the current availability and functionality of all major medical devices across a representative sample of health facilities in the focus counties. The goal of these device inventories will be to quantify important data points like the current breadth of device types and models, key gaps in access, and the overall proportion of functional equipment. The project team will incorporate and build upon any existing device inventories, using supplemental data collection activities to ensure quality and completeness.

  1. Performing rapid landscaping and market analyses for eight high-priority medical devices to diagnose and understand barriers to

In parallel with the baseline device inventories, the project will conduct rapid market landscapes for the eight focus devices within the context of the five priority countries to identify potential barriers to access along each device’s pathway from manufacturer to patient. These market landscapes will assess topics like: Supply and distribution, Procurement and financing, Regulations and policy, Service delivery and Maintenance and repair.

Learnings from these rapid market landscapes will be critical to identifying and prioritizing subsequent interventions.

  1. Evaluating and piloting equipment management systems to identify effective strategies for managing ongoing equipment operation and

To strengthen equipment inventory and decision-making processes in the long term, PATH aims to understand what is required to design and implement an equipment management system. Key activities will include: Mapping current equipment management systems and gathering feedback from medical device users to better understand gaps/challenges with the current system and co-create potential future-state solutions to address those challenges.

PATH will work with key stakeholders to implement solutions identified through these activities, including supporting the procurement of equipment management services, advising implementation planning efforts, and facilitating the streamlining of processes, tools, and training materials.

 4.   Synthesizing learnings and prioritizing future areas for investment

Finally, PATH recognizes the need to provide MNCH stakeholders with a clear path forward to address the barriers identified throughout this project. Thus, PATH will engage in extensive, collaborative discussions with key stakeholders to translate project learnings into a set of actionable recommendations—summarizing and disseminating them in a publicly available report. These recommendations—drawing upon the insights from the device inventories, rapid landscapes, and pilot equipment management systems—will support the identification and prioritization of future areas for health investment.

Through these recommendations, PATH aims to provide a road map for increasing availability and use of critical medical devices, and ultimately improving access to effective MNCH health services.
