Job Introduction

The BBC is an international multimedia broadcaster on radio, TV, online and social networks with a weekly global audience of 320 million.  As part of a historic and exciting expansion of BBC Africa, the BBC World Service established an editorial, digital innovation team in Nairobi that has a mandate to create innovative and engaging digital content for African and global audiences.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Journalist Team Manager to join our digital hub in Nairobi to lead and develop our multi-disciplinary digital team.

Role Responsibility

Your role is to lead and inspire a multi-disciplinary digital journalism team based in Nairobi, made up of news journalists, designers, software developers and social media specialists.  The team works across 12 African language services including English, Amharic, Tigrinya, Afaan Oromo, Swahili, Somali, French, Great Lakes, Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa.  The aim is to create original and innovative content, new forms of digital storytelling and journalism that reaches 111 million people in Africa.  There is a particular focus on underserved audiences, including young and female audiences.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in a senior journalistic role with in-depth knowledge of African news and international current affairs.  You will be a skilled team leader who understands how to create an inclusive workplace.  Experience of managing budgets and observing tight financial targets is important.  A full command of English (written and spoken) is essential.  A track record of accuracy and impartiality and sound editorial judgement is important.  You must have excellent knowledge of digital analytics, Africa’s digital market and how they can be used to improve output and drive change.  Experience in either visual journalism, medium and long-form digital video production and features and investigations would be a distinct advantage.
