Research Medical Specialist – Part Time 15% FTE

EMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) is one of the leading research centres in Africa. The Programme engages in a wide range of research on the main causes of ill health in Africa.

In addition, KWTRP has a strong commitment towards developing local research leadership.

The Health Systems and Research Ethics department under which this position falls focuses on Health Policy and Systems Research, contributing to research focused on health services, economics, policy and on the management environment of health facilities.

A newly funded 3-year QuEST project aims at building the evidence base to support transformation to high quality health systems by improving measurement, testing solutions, and creating generalizable knowledge in partnership with changemakers in low- and middle-income countries. The objectives of the QuEST project are to to deliver critical research expertise to strengthen evidence on improving health systems. The goal is to have health system that are responsive to the people that they aim to serve by working closely with country governments and global partners to design and test future health system models and measures. This will be accomplished through preparing the  base for service delivery redesign-by conducting  feasibility assessments and codeveloping models for service delivery redesign for maternal and newborn survival  and by developing and testing an E-Cohorts for Maternal and Newborn Health.

The project is seeking a Research Medical Specialist to lead and provide expert advice related to feasibility assessment of the service delivery redesign in one county and lead the design and testing of the e-cohort while working closely and supervising junior team members supporting these research activities. The individual will be supported by a team of more junior scientists and will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team of senior health system scientists In particular, the individual is expected to help design, implement and test, with participating counties, a cohort of pregnant that will be followed up for a year whilst collecting both clinical and non-clinical outcomes. They will liaise with hospital staff and policymakers and managers at county and national levels working with collaborating scientists in Kenya and internationally.

They will help analyse data and write reports for hospitals as well as writing scientific manuscripts and also support efforts to build capacity by supervising junior researchers as appropriate.

Key responsibilities

Together with study PI the post-holder will:

  • Provide ongoing expert advice across the service delivery re-design and e-cohort components of the Kenya QuEST center and in collaboration with other QuEST centers
  • Support activities to design and undertake feasibility assessment of service delivery redesign in one county in Kenya
  • Help in the design, testing and implementation of an e-cohort by validating measures longitudinally mapping the care trajectory and health outcomes of mothers and newborns
  • Participate and lead discussions on analytic strategies for the service delivery redesign and e-cohorts during monthly working group meetings and guide data collection and analyses approaches conducted by the junior teams assigned to the project
  • Contribute to the analysis of data and writing of reports for submission to international medical research journals
  • Present at national and international meetings on the work being conducted
  • Engage and support consultations with local, regional and national governments and other key stakeholders
  • To provide support in analysis to less experienced research staff / interns / collaborators

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have:

  • MMed in Gynecology and Obstetrics and accompanying current clinical experience
  • At least 1-2 years’ experience in a senior role as a obstetrics/gynecology consultant in a county (or tertiary) hospital in Kenya
  • Holders of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B; Ch.B.) degree or its equivalent degree from any recognized university or institution
  • Demonstrable experience of managing databases and conducting advanced statistical analyses
  • Evidence of prior scientific publication in international medical journals
  • Good knowledge of the statistical programme ‘R’
  • Good communicator and evidence of prior leadership roles
  • Should be able to work flexibly and travel for field related work within Kenya and where appropriate internationally
  • Ability to supervise scientific teams
  • Strong organization/programme management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and work within tight deadlines

Desirable

  • Evidence of prior engagement with the Ministry of Health
  • Excellent understanding of evidence-based medicine and quality of care literature
  • Demonstrated research experience with cohort studies
  • Good research experience of the Kenyan health system

Physical environment: This position will be entirely based in Nairobi even though currently working from home.
