Job Summary

AKU-IHD is leading an effort to set up a research hub known as the UZIMA-HUB. The Research Hub, UZIMA-DS, will create a scalable sustainable platform to apply novel approaches to data assimilation and advanced artificial intelligence (AI)/ machine learning (ML)-based methods to serve as early warning systems to address critical health issues impacting young Africans in two domains: maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and mental health. The programme is a joint initiative among multiple partners including AKU, University of Michigan, and KEMRI/ Wellcome Trust Programme among others.

Responsibilities

The Research Hub Manager will run the day-to-day administrative work of the hub, ensuring that all the teams are connected, working collaboratively and on target, through timely and consistent communication. They will support all grant management functions to ensure Hub teams and Sub-awardees synergize to deliver all activities. The Hub Manager will also facilitate engagement with multisectoral stakeholders to identify sustainable model dissemination pathways into target communities. Specially they will:

  • Facilitate the launch and planning process for the project in liaison with the investigators and Sub-awardees.
  • Ensure that all projects within the hub have followed all laid down regulatory rules
  • Maintain meticulous records of all research documents.
  • Support junior research staff within the hub by organizing training and mentoring opportunities
  • Handle the day to management activities of the hub ensuring that all teams work collaboratively and on target.
  • Organize regular meetings to track activities and implementation progress for UZIMA Hub and facilitate joint activities.
  • Organize and provide guidance for reviews and reflections on hub activities including yearly planning and budgeting meeting and close-out activities.
  • Provide support in identifying and scheduling for learning and sharing opportunities among the hub teams and external stakeholders.
  • In collaboration with Finance and Grants departments, manage the Sub-award process of onboarding, communication, funds transfers and collaborative activities.
  • Facilitate the process of formation and substance of a Community Advisory Board, including selection, invitations, and Terms of Engagement
  • Spearhead all community engagement processes and activities.
  • Work with finance to ensure financial reports are submitted to donors on time and ensure that all reporting procedures, technical and financial, are adhered to.
  • Ensure smooth communication and coordination among all partners (internal and external) for UZIMA
  • Work closely with the AKU communications team to ensure project activities are profiled through the different channels of communication targeting all key stakeholders including women, parents, implementers and policy makers among others.
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications Officer to package information for dissemination to different audiences including policy makers, research communities and other audiences.
  • Oversee and guide the activities of the Research Hub Admin and Dissemination Core.
  • Organize team building activities to activate synergy and foster teamwork.
 Requirements
  • Must possess a PhD in Public Health, Maternal and Child Health, Psychology or other allied field with at least 3 years’ experience or, a Master’s degree in Public Health, Maternal and Child Health, Psychology or allied field with at least 6 years’ experience.
  • Should have a strong research and project management/ coordination background.
  • Should have experience in coordinating or supporting a multi-disciplinary project with public health relevance.
  • Possess strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with fluency in English and Kiswahili.
  • Should have experience working in a multi-cultural setting and in community mobilization and partner engagement processes.
  • Demonstrable ability to document research study processes and outcomes and compile donor reports.
