Vacancy: PROGRAMMER – 1 position

Reports to : Director of Research

Duty Station: Kisumu

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop databases and systems as may be required, in the technology best suited for the particular need, e.g., MySQL, TSQL, MS Excel, MS Access.
  2. Develop input forms, reports and data extracts for EMR Systems used by the program (OpenMRS, KenyaEMR) and other software that may be in use.
  3. Provide support and advice to system administrators when they encounter software issues that require a more advanced understanding of the software.
  4. Actively participate in ensuring that newly developed innovations are rigorously tested, successfully piloted and well deployed.
  5. Participate actively in the systems team and offer advice on systems development issues. When requested, evaluate software for suitability to IRDO.
  6. Meet with the data quality team and participate actively in defining and achieving data quality objectives, then develop systems as required to assure data quality.
  7. Provide software as needed to transfer and transform data between various platforms and data stores such as MySQL, MS Access and ODK and Excel spreadsheets.
  8. Develop software as necessary to support and extend the EMRs and any other software applications that may be in use.
  9. Help to deploy and install open source applications and in-house developed software.
  10. Program data tools on application for online surveys platforms as such as ODK,RedCap, SurveyCTO, etc
  11. Respond to ad hoc data requests as requested by the organization.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  2. At least 5 years’ experience as a programmer in a busy development environment
    using Java, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Other Required Skills

  1. Ability to develop web based applications.
  2. Good understanding of the design and development of mobile applicationsrequired.
  3. Understanding of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems added advantage.
  4. Proven practical knowledge of the following programming languages: HTML,CSS, Java, jQuery, Javascript, SQL.
  5. Proven ability to extract data from relational databases using SQL.
  6. Ability to translate user requirements into functional specifications.
  7. Familiarity with mobile applications development.
  8. Proven ability to train users on the use of computer applications.
  9. Good documentation skills with high attention to detail.
  10. Good presentation skills.
  11. Ability to keep abreast with current technology and quickly learn new development tools and technologies.
