About the Team

Climate change is the most pressing challenge facing humanity and we continue to see its impacts, including frequent extreme weather events, displacement of vulnerable populations, increase in temperatures, wildfires and droughts, reduction of wildlife populations and biodiversity, lower agricultural yields, sea-level rises and daily loss of forest.

The GSMA ClimateTech programme works to unlock the power of digital technology in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), to enable their transition towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. We do this through the collective support of the mobile industry, as well as public and private actors.

Through our research activities, we identify, promote and inform opportunities for digital innovation. Developing pathways for aligning climate action with the sustainable development agenda. We also catalyse vital partnerships. Between the GSMA, the mobile industry, tech innovators, governments and the development sector. Aiming to reduce fragmentation, facilitate scale and promote collective action

About the Role

In this role, you will work alongside the Senior Insights Manager to deliver new and persuasive research that identifies, promotes, informs and advances digital innovations that enable low- and middle-income countries to transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient economies. You will engage with a wide range of partners and experts to pinpoint new partnership and commercial opportunities, document the role of the mobile industry (and private sector more broadly) in supporting climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience building efforts, and develop a pathway for aligning climate action with the sustainable development agenda. Please see our research outputs covering wide range of topics including climate finance, natural resource management, plastic pollution, trends in climate technology and many more here.

A key part of this role will be helping the ClimateTech team and our international partners understand how digital technology (including, but not limited to, mobile devices and payment platforms, satellite, artificial intelligence and connected devices) could be better leveraged to strengthen climate action. You will also work to help build and maintain the programme’s network of partners, identifying and building relationships with organisations that share our vision of leveraging private sector expertise and digital technology to solve critical environmental challenges. You will help ensure that the ClimateTech team is positioned as the industry leader and key collaborator on a wide range of topics, and will present research findings and outputs at a range of external and internal events.

About You

The right candidate will be able to draw on a solid foundation of commercial expertise and industry knowledge and be excited to join a diverse team that shares a passion for the ways mobile phones can empower people. We welcome applications from professionals with the following demonstrated qualifications:

  • Understanding of the mobile industry, recognising key industry trends, commercial drivers and challenges faced by mobile operators in developing countries
  • Background and experience linked to climate and environmental issues and understanding of the use of technology for climate action is essential.
  • You are a quick learner, and are able to grasp the complexities of new emerging technologies (e.g. IoT, Big Data etc.) and business models. You have experience in working towards sustainability outcomes within a commercial domain
  • You can work in an emerging opportunity area without a defined blueprint. You are experienced in providing strategic thinking as well as day-to-day support to external research organisations and contractors.
  • You are a team player and are able to achieve results through your excellent relationship management skills, collaboration and your ability to consider the interests of multiple stakeholders in your day-to-day work. You complement these skills with a proved ability to negotiate and influence all types of stakeholders, including C-level management, through an evidence-based approach.
  • Outstanding communication skills in English language. To achieve results, you communicate timely and effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, adapting to different styles and working collaboratively towards agreed outcomes for projects.
  • Excellent presentation skills and writing skills, with an ability to structure reports coherently with minimal guidance from your manager. Additional language skills are advantageous.
  • You are used to working in multicultural and geographically spread-out teams. A self-starter and highly motivated individual, you manage projects and drive them through to completion.
