Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Safety Manager, the ideal candidate will be required to develop, implement and monitor environmental strategies, policies and programs that ensure environmental sustainability within the Company and/or neighboring communities. He/she will also be required to examine all general activities and establish where improvements can be made, ensure sustenance of established environmental management systems, check that companywide compliance with environmental regulation is achieved as well as undertaking actual implementation of specific activities monitoring and reviewing of Occupational Health & Safety programs and measures.
Principle Accountabilities:
- Develop, implement & sustain environmental management system with respect to strategies and action plans that ensure compliance to company and legislative requirements.
- Ensure the program for ‘environmentally friendly purchasing’ is continuously developed and sustained throughout the company.
- Coordinate all activities and programs for pollution prevention and control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewable energy.
- Regularly audit, analyze, and report environmental performance by the entire units of the company.
- Undertake frequent environmental impact assessment/audits to identify, assess and reduce environmental risk and financial loss.
- Design and coordinate implementation of programs for raising environmental awareness at all levels and extent of company; such programs to include impact of emerging environmental issues.
- Coordinate public hearings and consultations on environmental matters that relate to the Company and the neighbors.
- Write periodic environmental reports on any issue of relevance and ensure companywide dissemination of the same.
- In liaison with Corporate Communication Office, develop environmental awareness videos, fliers, pamphlets and any other awareness materials for different segments in the company.
- Develop Occupational Health & Safety procedures.
- Conduct and/or coordinate in-house occupational health & safety training and awareness sessions.
- Maintain database on health & safety inspections/audits and publish reports that recommend areas that need improvement.
- Maintain records of all reported incidents and accidents and generate statistics on performance or any other analysis requirement.
- Work closely with Head of occupational health & medical services and/or the direct reports to ensure compliance with OSHA Act in areas of medical examinations, industrial hygiene, drugs and alcohol, health surveillance, and health education at the ramp.
- Continuously undertake environmental, health & safety audits & inspections.
- Ensure safety, health & environmental issues/concerns in all Kenya Airways stations are proactively managed while working closely with the Station Manager.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health & safety standards throughout the organization.
- Create awareness/train employees on environmental and occupational health & safety programs and activities and safe working practices.
- Support internal and external statutory audits environment, health & safety.
- Support activities of Departmental & Divisional health & safety committees.
- Conduct awareness safe waste disposal and advice on waste management.
- Ensure all site equipment and machinery conforms to both local and international standards.
- Ensure implementation of safety, security and emergency standards at all times.
- Ensure and maintain a healthy, safe and secure working environment in compliance with the relevant industry, regulatory and legislative requirements, company procedures, regulatory authorities and requirements of customer airlines.
Knowledge, Skills and experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences or Technical related/Industrial processes field from a recognized institution.
- Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety Management.
- Associate member approved by the National Environment Management Agency-NEMA to undertake Environmental Audits/Impact assessments.
- Minimum of 3 years’ working experience in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental management.
- Experience in Environmental or Occupational Health & Safety or Quality audits.
- Training & experience in implementation of Certified Environmental Management System.
- Demonstration of ability to write technical Environmental Management Manuals or Procedures.
- Training and/or experience in Environmental or Occupational Health & Safety audits.
- Demonstrate understanding of the environmental issues and linkages and interactions.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Demonstrated experience in report writing.
- Conversant with relevant IT Tools and Systems.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Must be a person of unquestionable integrity.
