Job Summary

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the Department of Population Health entails a highly-skilled multi-disciplinary team with expertise in medical, public health, social, demography, statistical and policy sciences with a vision to contribute to the health of populations, particularly those most in need, by using a population health science approach.

Responsibilities

The Epidemiologist will take responsibility for teaching research and epidemiological methods and providing methodological support to research projects conducted by Faculty in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), and FHS residents’ and students’ dissertation projects. S/he will also write/lead and/or contribute to strengthening research grant proposals by developing, maintaining, and implementing rigorous methodological frameworks and resources for research. The individual will be expected to work towards developing an academic career in applied aspects of epidemiology in health research. As an academic member of the Department of Population Health, the incumbent will:

  • Teach research/epidemiological methods courses to residents and students in FHS.
  • Provide epidemiological/methodology advisory services for students’ and residents’ dissertations projects and specific FHS research projects.
  • Develop and/or continuously update and take responsibility for the epidemiological/methods components of Research Methods course
  • Lead specific research projects or components and contribute to epidemiological data analysis, interpretation, publication, presentation.
  • Develop and maintain research methodological quality assessment protocols and continuously monitor and advise research projects on data quality issues.
  • Provide support in interpreting epidemiological and statistical analyses to colleagues and researchers in the department.
  • Schedule the timely preparation of project reports of epidemiological analyses for study teams and for scientific publications.
 Requirements
  • Research experience as a lead researcher and/or key member of a research team
  • Teaching undergraduates or graduate students at the university level or mentorship of interns/students in a research environment.
  • Published author or contributing author to peer-reviewed publications
  • A PhD in Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology, Research Methods or any closely related field.
  • Demonstrated progress towards completion of a PhD in these fields (within 1 year of the date of appointment) will be considered.
  • BA and/or MA in any of the above or closely related fields.
  • Training and/or experience in geospatial epidemiology/statistics will be a distinct advantage
  • Demonstrated application of epidemiological methods in research, preferably in the health sciences.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with one or more statistical analyses software (e.g. Stata, R, SPSS or SAS).
  • Experience in teaching and/or supporting quantitative methods teaching/mentoring of leaners.
