The Tax Compliance Manager is a key role within the ICEA LION Group that will support the Finance functions and the relevant businesses. This is geared towards ensuring that the Group is compliant with all tax heads for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The following are the role’s primary focus areas:

Tax Compliance: Ensure that all tax heads and processes are compliant with existing tax laws and that the Group adapts quickly to operationalize new laws as and when they arise.

Business Expansions and Projects: Partner with internal and external parties to review all proposed expansions and new projects to create project-specific requirements. Additionally, ensure that the Group optimises and complies with existing tax laws by developing tax compliance solutions, testing and operationalising them based on the Group requirements.

Customer Experience: Determine effective tax solutions to satisfy customer needs. Collaborate with business on tax implications on new products or enhancements to current products to delight our customers.

Tax Strategies: Partner with the Heads of Finance to develop Group tax minimization strategies including determining the frequency of Health Checks for each of the businesses and the tax consultants to carry out such exercises.

Review of Operating Systems: Review the existing corporate systems to determine their fitness for purpose to support businesses in complying with tax regulations, recommend action and follow through for implementation

Build Capacity: Partner with the Heads of Finance to assess available tax knowledge among key staff, develop and deliver appropriate training programs to close all identified gaps.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensuring that all companies in the Group comply with all laws and regulations regarding taxes and other statutory requirements.
    Evaluating tax law changes and business initiatives to provide requirements to build new solutions or make changes to existing tax processes and systems.
  • Driving and managing tax projects throughout their life-cycle.
  • Communicating with internal and external customers about Group policies related to tax information collection.
  • Tax information reporting, including research and analysis of exceptions related to tax information.
  • Building capacity within the Finance team responsible tax administration in the Group
  • Oversee timely and correct tax reporting and follow-up of tax payments/refunds.
  • Research and analysis of tax legislation in countries where we are operational and intend to expand into.
  • Working collaboratively with local in-country advisors to ensure direct, indirect and personal taxes are managed appropriately in foreign countries.
  • Maintaining Tax, Compliance & Statutory returns calendar for the Group.
  • Together with the CFO develop tax strategies to minimize overall taxation of the Group.
  • Identify and mitigate tax risks.
  • Management of tax audits for the Group as they arise.
  • Improve processes by developing or implementing best practices.

Academic and Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in accounting, Finance, Management, Taxation, Tax Law or related discipline from a reputable university.
  • Master’s in business related course is an added advantage.
  • Professional qualification(s) in accounting such as ACCA, CPA (K) or equivalent.

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Ten (10) years’ experience in accounting and tax management, and at least 5 – 7 years’ experience in managerial position in a tax consultancy firm, a large multi-national organization or a Group of companies.
  • Knowledge and in depth understanding of the East African tax regulatory environment.
  • Strong tax research skills.
  • An understanding and experience of the structures and tax planning approaches used internationally.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with cross-functional teams.
  • In depth understanding of financial services and products.
  • Versatility in a change environment.
