KENYA MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Opening date: 13th April, 2022
Project description: Sero–epidemiology in Africa of iNTS Non–typhoidal Salmonellosis (NTS), has emerged as a prominent cause of bloodstream infection in adults and children within Sub–Saharan Africa, with incidence of 227 cases/100,000 population. This disease is caused by invasive strains of NTS (iNTS). The largest number of cases annually (1.9 million cases) is found in children under 5 years of age with an associated case fatality of 20–25%. Increasing AMR in NTS is of great global concern, with low and middle–income countries suffering mostly as alternative drugs for effective treatment of life–threatening invasive disease are eroding rapidly. Over the last two decades the two main serotypes of iNTS in children in Africa were S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis, accounting for 70.8% of all iNTS. Convalescent and chronic carriers are known to shed NTS in stool, however carriage of NTS is far less studied and the prevalence of long–term NTS carriers and their possible role in infection of new cases in the population is not known. The study will be carried out at Mukuru kwa Njenga and Mama Lucy Health facilities.
