The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is recruiting for a  Senior Technical Specialist with strong experience in the area of food systems, to support the design and implementation of research activities for their new EatSafe project. This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

About GAIN

GAIN is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people. In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially those most vulnerable to malnutrition.

About the role

The Senior Technical Specialist will provide strategic and technical nutrition expertise throughout the design, implementation, and evaluation stages of all the projects in Kenya. The role will also provide leadership in the development and implementation of assessments and research agendas within one or more of GAINs programming areas ensuring other technical specialists remain aligned to the nutrition and food systems agenda of GAIN.

As part of the senior management team of the GAIN Kenya office, the Senior Technical Specialist will assist in ensuring organizational efficiency and effectiveness through participation in decision making, advising on strategic programmatic areas, solving problems, communication and implementation of agreed decisions.​

Role specifics include;

  • Overseeing the technical unit of the Kenya Programme to ensure effective ongoing technical performance of a complex and ambitious food systems programme 
  • Collaborating with the Country Director on the development, implementation and quality management of the country programme 
  • Guiding and working with project managers and other internal technical experts to ensure appropriate nutrition interventions are incorporated and implemented in the GAIN projects
  • Working with government and development partners to contribute to the development of nutrition related guidelines
  • Leading on the development of research agendas that will permit the identification and prioritization of research questions related to strategic areas within GAIN
  • Representing GAIN during key industry discussions and events, while providing analysis, technical insights and disseminating lessons learnt

About you

You will have strong research, design and implementation skills in one of quantitative or qualitative research methods as well as an understanding of and experience in evidence translation.

You will need strong, hands-on experience in programmatically relevant research at a senior level, including working in research relevant to food systems, nutrition and / or food safety. Additionally, you will need to demonstrate a track record in the publication of research results and evidence consolidation and translation.

Experience in the performance management of agriculture-nutrition programs would be an asset.

About our offer

The starting salary on offer for this role is from KES 5,363,448 – KES 6,129,648 per annum, depending on experience.

GAIN has a fair and competitive salary structure that allows for annual progression subject to good performance. In addition, GAIN offers a total of 37 days holiday per year (including annual leave, public holidays and additional office closure days), an attractive pension scheme and competitive insurance cover including health, travel and life assurance.
