Job Description Template for a Credit Officer in a microfinance institution: We are seeking to recruit an experienced male professional to join their team as a Credit Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the full credit cycle, from client sourcing and loan appraisal to disbursement and recovery, while ensuring portfolio quality and compliance with lending policies.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Identifying and recruiting eligible loan clients in line with company lending criteria
- Conducting detailed credit assessments, including client interviews and site visits
- Analyzing financial information and assess clients’ repayment capacity
- Preparing and presenting loan appraisal reports for approval
- Monitoring and managing loan portfolios to ensure high repayment rates
- Following up on overdue accounts and implement effective recovery strategies
- Maintaining accurate client records and prepare periodic performance reports
- Ensuring compliance with internal credit policies and regulatory requirements
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients to support business growth
- Verifying client information through background checks and reference confirmations
- Resolving client complaints related to loan processing and repayments
- Maintaining confidentiality of client and company information
- Performing regular follow-up visits to clients’ businesses to monitor performance
- Educating clients on loan products, terms, conditions, and repayment schedules
- Cross-selling other financial products offered by the institution
- Assisting in training junior credit staff when required
- Evaluating collateral and ensure proper documentation where applicable
Qualifications & Skills Required
- Diploma in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Banking, or a related field
- Minimum of 1 year experience as a Credit Officer or in a similar microfinance role
- Proven experience in loan appraisal, portfolio management, and debt recovery
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to meet set targets and work under pressure
- Strong understanding of credit risk assessment principles
- Strong marketing skills with the ability to identify and attract potential clients
- Good client relationship management skills
- Proficient in loan disbursement processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance with policies
- Good debt collection skills
